Soquel, California, close to the coastal waters,
is home to Camphill Communities California. Redwoods and the beautiful
Monterey Bay are physical elements that define the area. The bay is within the
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Established in 1992 it covers
4,601 square nautical miles of ocean. Looking out to sea you can watch sea
otters, migrating whales, an abundance of birds, surfers and kayakers.
What aren't seen are the huge deep water canyon, large kelp forest and ocean
research conducted here.
In our interpretation of The Ocean, it could be any time of year. Under a clear blue sky, far on the horizon is a bank of fog waiting to come in. Sunlight reflecting off the placid Pacific water is a norm, as are ocean currents giving a variety of colors to the water. The generally mild climate allows Camphill residents to enjoy the beach and working on the land year round.
